Info Post

No offense to “One More Night,” which is actually a pretty decent song, but how many people could sing an entire lyric from that song? The second Maroon 5 single off the increasingly accurately titled Overexposed, based around an Ace of Base-like hook and singer Adam Levine’s chopped-up falsetto crooning, has somehow done what its predecessor “Payphone”—one of the most unavoidable songs of the year, and one which we probably still hear more regularly on the radio than “Night”—could not, and reached the summit on the Hot 100. The #1 is M5′s third, following 2007′s “Makes Me Wonder” and last year’s “Moves Like Jagger.” Weird.

Psy Charts

In a busy week for the pop charts, the other most-noteworthy occurrence is probably the ascent of Psy’s “Gangnam Style,” which soars from all the way from 64 to 11 on the Hot 100 this week, sure to make the leap to the top ten next week and likely to contend for the #1 spot before too long. The song would be the first #1 to be largely in a foreign language since Enrique Iglesias’ “Bailamos”—unless you consider songs like Sean Paul’s “Get Busy” or Soulja Boy’s “Crank That Soulja Boy” to be in a foreign language, which would be fairly hard to argue with.

Also, chart shout-outs to a couple rock bands getting it done. First, Dave Matthew Band, who despite arguably being a full decade-and-a-half past their peak in popularity still managed the year’s third-biggest first-week sales for their latest albumAway From the World, which moves 266k and gets the band their sixth consecutive #1 album. Second, good ol’ fun., who need never no more worry about being dubbed as one-hit wonders after their “We Are Young” follow-up “Some Nights” has climbed to #3 on the Hot 100, possibly on its way to giving the group their improbable second straight chart-topper. We’re rooting for you, guys.
