Info Post

There’s something there with that Calvin Harris and Florence Welch pairing. They first teamed up when Calvin remixed her “Spectrum (Say My Name),” elevating it to the dancefloor heavens and the top of the UK pop and US dance charts, and now they have “Sweet Nothing,” what must be the 14th lead single off Calvin’s upcoming 18 Months album.

The EDM diva look is a surprisingly good one for Florence—she’s such a stronger vocalist than most of the wispy-voiced sirens called on to sing for the likes of Guetta and Deadmau5 that she calls back to the days of disco powerhouses like Thelma Houston and Gloria Gaynor, and putting Harris’ ecstatic beats underneath her really allow her to soar. “Sweet Nothing” makes the duo two for two, and we can only hope that further dueting (and maybe a collaborative album or tour or something) is in the works.

The video for “Sweet Nothing” is also surprisingly successful, featuring Welch as a tortured singer in a strip club whose boyfriend (who looks a lot like a younger version of the Fall lead singer Mark E. Smith) is getting beaten up outside while an evidently interested Harris watches from the crowd. It’s an intriguing little mini-drama, and Florence looks Janelle Monae-esque with her suit, tie and pompadour-like hair, while also channeling a little Isabella Rossellini in Blue Velvet with her agonized torch song performance.

Pretty rich stuff altogether. We’re lucky to have both these guys in pop music right now, especially so when they work together.
